The Butterflyway Project

Sustainable Cities and Communities Climate Action Life on Land

A project by the David Suzuki foundation, the Butterflyway Project is a citizen-led movement that aims to plant native wildflowers in yards, schoolyards, streets and parks to support bees and butterflies. The goal was to establish local “Butterflyways” by planting at least a dozen pollinator patches in each neighbourhood. Because climate change and widespread pesticide use are compromising their habitat and food sources, wild pollinators such as butterflies and bees are crucial to human survival. The Butterflyway Project has expanded to more than 100 communities throughout the country and is a perfect example of how a small group of communities can make an impactful difference.
